Investigating criminal activity hurts national security?

This goes along with my 'defend America' earlier post.
That is what the NSA told the state of Maine. Sure Verizon broke the law, but they can't be investigated. Because it might hurt America? No way. Because it might show that the Bush administration absolves itself from all criminal activity. How sad is it when the president claims that he is above all laws? He must have issued a signing statement when he took the oath of office.
